Join me to amplify your writing teaching with the mini-trainings and resources in my writing source travel! My college students did at first, so I knew I needed a great mini-lesson on writing opinion items. Common Core Requirements resolved: RI.

I use them to create projects to share with my college students. Make this a center activity, or print an article from NewsELA for free! One of the great items about NewsELA is definitely that you can spotlight the text. First we recognized the query, which was easy because it was at the top of the article.

Next, we go through through the text and highlighted all of the good reasons and evidence for Yes Pro green and No Con reddish. We added estimates around this text and a phrase starter so that we were correctly quoting the text instead of just burning plagiarizing. Lastly, we used the info we gathered to formulate an opinion.

We published a claim that solved the query and offered our opinion, explained in our personal terms, and used items of text-based evidence from the article to support our claim. At the end of the lesson, I have my college students share their Google Doc link with me on Edmodo for easy grading. I feel like my college students are top prepared and excited to do study and formulate an opinion thanks to their work using NewsELA!
